Local Aviation Resources

Welcome to our local aviation resources page! Whether you're a student pilot or an experienced aviator, this page is designed to provide essential information on obtaining an FAA medical certificate and connect you with local Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs). For more information please visit the FAA's website

Understanding the FAA Medical Certificate

Before you can act as Pilot in Command (PIC), you must hold a valid FAA medical certificate. While not required to start flight training, obtaining your medical early ensures there are no unexpected health issues that could impact your ability to fly. â€‹

Types of FAA Medical Certificates

  • First Class – Required for airline transport pilots (ATP).

  • Second Class – Required for commercial pilots.

  • Third Class – Required for private pilots and recreational flying.

If your long-term goal is a professional aviation career, it's advisable to obtain a First Class Medical from the start to confirm your eligibility.

The Medical Exam Process

FAA medical certificates can only be issued by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Here’s how to prepare:

  1. Find an AME – Use the FAA database (FAA AME Locator) or choose from our list below.

  2. Complete MedXPress Forms – Register at medxpress.faa.gov and fill out the required health questionnaire.

  3. Schedule Your Exam – AMEs are often booked 2-4 weeks out, so plan ahead.

  4. Attend Your Exam – Bring your MedXPress confirmation number and, if needed, corrective lenses.

  5. Receive Your Certificate – If you meet FAA medical standards, your AME will issue your certificate on the spot.
